چکیده
This paper describes a device that allows the imaging of prosthetic legs under load conditions using spiral computerized tomography (CT). The device consists of a chair and a vertical footplate mounted on a 17.8 x 1.9 cm oak board that is 197 cm long. The load device can be easily positioned onto the CT bed. A subject sits in the chair and applies force by pushing the foot portion of the prosthesis against the footplate. The magnitude of the force is monitored by a digital force gauge coupled to the footplate. Because the load is borne by the hips and lower back of the subject against the chair, substantial forces can be generated and steadily maintained for the 20-45 s duration of the CT study. This device has been used successfully with 19 transtibial amputees, allowing the acquisition of spiral CT studies with half and full body weight loads.

The quasi-static response of compliant prosthetic sockets for transtibial amputees using finite element methods.
The finite element method (FEM) is a very powerful tool for analyzing the behavior of structures, especially when the geometry and mechanics are too complex to be modeled with analytical methods. This study focuses on the analysis of patellar tendon bearing prosthetic sockets with integrated compliant features designed to relieve contact pressure between the residual limb and socket. We develop...
متن کاملA comparison between the dimensions of positive transtibial residual limb molds prepared by air pressure casting and weight-bearing casting methods
Background: Creating a socket with proper fit is an important factor to ensure the comfort and control of prosthetic devices. Several techniques are commonly used to cast transtibial stumps but their effect on stump shape deformation is not well understood. This study compares the dimensions, circumferences and volumes of the positive casts and also the socket comfort between two casting method...
متن کاملTranstibial amputee joint rotation moments during straight-line walking and a common turning task with and without a torsion adapter.
Amputees lack movement and control mechanisms at the foot and ankle that result in different strategies for locomotion than nonamputees. The torsion adapter is a prosthetic device designed to minimize shear stress at the residual limb by facilitating rotation in the transverse plane. This study determined if the addition of a torsion adapter alters lower-limb joint rotation moments of transtibi...
متن کاملThe relative contributions of the prosthetic and sound limb to balance control in unilateral transtibial amputees.
In unilateral transtibial amputees maintenance of standing balance is compromised due to the lack of active ankle control in the prosthetic limb. The purpose of this study is to disentangle the contribution of the prosthetic and sound limb to balance control following waist-pull perturbations. We compared the contribution of the hip and ankle joints to balance control of 15 unilateral transtibi...
متن کاملTitle: The Effect of Prosthetic Foot Push-off on Mechanical Loading Associated with Knee Osteoarthritis in Lower Extremity Amputees
Lower extremity amputation not only limits mobility, but also increases the risk of knee osteoarthritis of the intact limb. Dynamic walking models of non-amputees suggest that an appropriately timed push-off from the trailing limb can reduce collision forces on the leading limb. These collision forces may determine the peak knee external adduction moment (EAM), which has been linked to the deve...
